Clarence Richard "Red" Wonacott, 83, of Orland, passed away quietly at home in the company of family and a longtime friend on November 25, 2018.
Clarence was born January 1, 1935 in Twin Falls, Idaho to Opal Marie Evilsizer and Newton Edward Wonacott, the second of two children. Many of Red's early years were spent in the homes of Aunts and Uncles throughout Idaho where he developed lifelong relationships and learned the rewards and challenges of farming. He became fiercely independent at an early age, and at nineteen was recruited by the United States Navy. Red served four years in the Navy. While on leave in the San Jose, California area, he met Barbara Jean Harbick who soon became his wife and followed him to the Philippines where they learned firsthand about the culture and lifestyle of the people there. Upon completion of his Navy enlistment and their return to the States, Red and Barbara welcomed their first child, Richard, followed by daughter, Kerry. Red attended college and worked at various jobs before relocating his family to Chico, California. Working as a mechanic, Red shortly became co-owner of the Sierra Transmission Shop. After several years Red sold his interest in the transmission shop and took a job in Logging. Daughter Cassie arrived and Red joined the workforce of Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) where he worked in general construction first as a Lineman, then serving for a time as a GC crew supervisor, and later as a Troubleman in the Glenn County area, working outdoors and at the top of a power pole in the best and worst weather for more than 30 years.
It was Red's love of land that led him and Barbara to purchase a small family farm in Orland. He loved working the land, driving tractor, and seeing the results of his hard work, and for a while he did custom hay baling for others. He planted an impressive summer garden for many years. In earlier years Red enjoyed riding dirt bikes, target shooting, fishing, football, collecting glass insulators, and later enjoyed riding touring motorcycles. He enjoyed spending time with friends and family, and his Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren filled a very special place in his heart. Red took great pride in belonging to the Masons. And more recently, Red found joy in restoring his 1936 Ford and being a member of the Northern California Early Ford V8 Car Club.
Clarence "Red" is predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Barbara Wonacott, his parents, and his brother Newton Henry Wonacott. He is survived by his children and their spouses, Richard and Donna Wonacott, Kerry and Carl Henker, and Cassie Wise, his eight grandchildren, Paige Henker, Kyle Henker, Amber Wise, Christopher Wise, Scott Wonacott, Charlie Wonacott, Paula Warren, and Craig Henker, and three great-grandchildren, Allyce Warren, Brooklyn Warren, and Poseidon "Posie" Wise, and his best buddy Maverick.
The family of Clarence "Red" Wonacott would like to extend our most sincere appreciation for the loving and compassionate care provided by all of his doctors, caregivers, and staff at Enloe Medical Center, Enloe Hospice, Enloe Repiratory Rehabilitation Program, California Park Rehabilitation Hospital, Veterans Administration Healthcare Providers and Support Services, Addus HomeCare, and Agnes who cared for him in his final days.
