HAROLD JOSEPH FRANK September 20, 1918 - March 14, 2018
On March 14, 2018, Harold Joseph Frank, 99, of Orland, passed away peacefully in a Chico hospital with his family at his side. Harold was born in Aberdeen, SD, on September 20, 1918, to Henry Frank and Mary Krauel. His mother died when he was four years old and Harold and his younger brother Eugene were sent to live with an aunt and uncle on a farm in Benton County, MN. His first eight grades were in a one-room school. Harold was active in 4-H and was a County Livestock Champion raising a prize-winning Poland China Gilt hog, which at one time held a world record for the number of pigs farrowed. Harold graduated from Milaca High School in 1936 and followed his older brother Henry to Los Angeles, CA, where he worked for Ralph's Grocery Co. from 1937 to 1959. During this time he also served two years in the
US Navy during WWII . In 1938, he met the love of his life, Gladys Powell, whom he married in Westwood Village on June 10, 1939. They were married for 78 years before Gladys' passing in 2017. With his wife and four children, Harold moved to Orland in 1959. He farmed a small almond acreage while working for grocery markets in Willows for four years. He then worked 17 years for the Post Office in Orland. Harold won the coveted Pride in Excellence Award for the Western Region as he was very dedicated to his work. He retired in 1980 and was a member of Glenn Co. Hospice until 1990. Harold was a devoted member of St. Dominic's Catholic Church. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and also a Eucharistic minister bri-nging communion to those who were home bound. In his later years, he tended the church's garden. Harold and Gladys enjoyed traveling in their camper to visit relatives and friends across the country. One of their favorite getaways was up to Patrick's Point on the far Northern California coast. They were also known for their project of cracking walnuts so that they were able to pass them on to friends and relatives to use for their holiday baking. Harold was an avid bowler especially enjoying tournaments. He loved golf but never got above a bogie handicap. Harold is survived by his children Don (Julie) of Pleasant Hill, CA, Sue Beigh of Orland, and Joe (Loretta) of Orland. He leaves behind a legacy of ten grandchildren, twenty great-grand children, and eight great-great-grandchildren.
