Obituary

James Darrell Millert (August 19th 1934 - August 20th 2025)

James (Jim) Darrell Millert passed away peacefully at his home in Chico, California, a day after celebrating his 91st birthday.

Jim lived a remarkable and fulfilling life. A proud veteran, he was enlisted in the U.S Army and was stationed in Germany for two years. His time abroad allowed him to travel across Europe and develop a love of seeing the world—a passion he would continue to pursue throughout his life. After marrying the love of his life, Shirley Millert, the two spent 59 wonderful years together. They shared many adventures around the globe, with Hawaii holding a special place in their hearts.

When he wasn't traveling, Jim was making an impact locally. Jim devoted 36 years of his professional life to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, where he played an instrumental role in the development and management of Black Butte Lake. He was a dedicated community member, actively involved in the Orland Alumni Association, the Orland and Chico Kiwanis Clubs, and the Orland Parks and Recreation Commission. In 1983, he proudly served as Orland's vice-mayor. Through Kiwanis, he helped support underserved families by launching programs that continue to benefit the community.

Along with community service, Jim also had a lifelong passion for baseball, which began as a young boy when he served as a ball boy for the Orland Tigers at Bihler Field. That love never waned—he went on to enjoy a 15-year career in Senior Softball and was honored as the first inductee into the Chico Senior Softball Hall of Fame.

Above all, Jim was a loving husband, a devoted father, and a proud grandfather and great-grandfather. He is survived by his sisters, Barbara Millert Holoter and Sandy Fichter; his son, Steve Millert; his daughter, Stacy Todd; his grandchildren Olivia Todd, Wyatt Todd, and Jeremy Millert; and his great-grandchildren Isabelle Millert and Porter Millert. His legacy lives on in the love he shared, the passions he followed, and the handmade birdhouses that now quietly watch over our yards.

Jim described himself as "the luckiest man ever." But in truth, it was his family, friends, and community who were truly lucky to have known and loved him. We take comfort in knowing he is now reunited with his beloved wife, Shirley. They are truly together forever.

Jim will be laid to rest at 11am on September 2nd at the Masonic Cemetery located at 6525 County Road 9 in Orland. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jims' memory may be made to your local Kiwanis organization.

Prior to the graveside service, family and friends are invited to meet at the Black Butte Lake observation point at 9:30am for an opportunity to share stories and remember James.

Arrangements are held under the direction of Sweet-Olsen Family Mortuary.
