Obituary

JIM ARANO
Jim Arano was born on October 28, 1942 in Modesto, California to George and Gladys Arano. He passed away on September 13, 2017 in Chico after a short illness. Jim attended Downey High School in Modesto until 1959, when the family moved to Orland to farm and dairy. He attended Orland High School where he excelled in agriculture, winning an award for outstanding project from Bank of America. He graduated with the class of 1961, and in 1963 he joined the
U.S. Air Force . In 1965, Jim married Claire Thompson, and in 1966, they moved to Seattle, Washington to work at the Boeing company. While there, they welcomed their son, Jim, Jr. in 1966, and their daughter Janine in 1968. Jim held a variety of jobs including welder, machinist, farmer, and real estate agent, but his first love was farming. He could fix anything, and woke up with new ideas every day. Jim was descended from the Castro family, one of the Spanish families to settle California, and was very proud of his heritage. His 4th great- grandfather, Joaquin Ysidro Castro traveled overland from Mexico with the De Anza party in 1774 and was instrumental in the settling of San Francisco. His 3rd great grandfather, Rafael Castro, was grantee of Rancho Aptos in Santa Cruz County. His 2nd great grandfather, Jose Arano, built the Bayview Hotel in Aptos, which still stands, and was the town's first postmaster. Jim leaves behind his wife of 52 years, son Jim, Jr. of North Bend, Oregon, daughter Dr. Janine Castro of Vancouver, Washington and grandchildren Keston Kuechel and Clarissa Arano. Services will be held on Friday, September 22, 2017 at 1:00 P.M. at the Gazebo at the Orland Oddfellows Cemetery in Orland. Donations in Jim's name may be made to the Orland Heroes Project in care of F.D. Sweet & Son's Mortuary.
