John Earl
Martin
Oct 27, 1937 — Jun 9, 2023
John "Jack" Martin was a loving husband, dad, grandfather, brother, and friend. He left this world on June 9th at the age of 85.
Jack was born on October 27, 1937, in Chico, California to John and Dorothy Martin. He grew up in Hamilton City with his brother and sister where he worked on the family farm. Jack graduated from Hamilton High School where he excelled on the basketball court and FFA. He obtained the rank of FFA State Farmer raising pigs.
After graduation, he attended Stanford University and Chico State University before he settled on the idea of becoming a funeral director. Jack attended the San Francisco College of Mortuary Science and he received his Mortuary License. He owned and operated FD Sweet and Sons Mortuary (now known as Sweet-Olsen Family Mortuary ) in Orland for over 40 years. On September 12th, 1959, he married his love, Pat Dempsey. They raised three children, Steve, Shannon and Sheri.
Jack had a passion for gardening, golf and community service. He invested heavily in Orland's youth by serving on the School Board for over 30 years. Jack's strong belief in education led him and several other members of the community to start the Orland Community Scholarship foundation. He believed that every young person should have an opportunity to further their education. When Jack wasn't working you could usually find him outside tending to his flowers. He was the only person who could work in the dirt all day wearing dress clothes and never get them dirty. He belonged to Kiwanis, the Masons and coached little league with son Steve on the roster. Golf was Jack's stress relief, but his game often resulted in more stress than relief. Afterwards he'd always be at the 19th Hole with his square and soda entertaining a group of friends with his wry sense of humor. Jack had a big heart and we will always remember him for his quick wit and compassionate spirit.
Preceded into Peace by his parents, John and Dorothy, his brother Jerry and his son Steve. Jack will be greatly missed by his wife, Pat, his sister Judy Bungarz, his daughter-in-law Sandra Martin and his daughters Shannon (Marty Cullen) and Sheri (Jim Reilley). Along with his seven grandchildren Haley Martin, Casie Martin, Maddie Walker (Bryan), Bailey Cullen, Mallory Antunez (Demetrio), Abbie Sullivan, Lucy Sullivan and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held Tuesday, July 18th at 1:00 a.m. at the Federated Church of Orland. For those who would like to make a memorial gift, the family has suggested the Orland High School Athletics Program (903 South Street).
