Obituary

Joseph "Richard" Simmons, 87, passed away May 27, 2020 at the Westhaven Senior Living in Orland, where he has been receiving hospice care since February 2020.

He was born August 28, 1932 in Arcata, CA to parents Joseph and Emily Simmons. Richard was a long-time resident of Orland beginning in 1951 when his family moved from Arcata. He enjoyed the country life and being around family members and friends. He married Mary "Ruby" Medina in 1955 at St. Dominics Catholic Church. He was a dairyman, restaurant owner and truck driver, which was the profession he loved the most. He also enjoyed watching his family and grandchildren grow into adulthood.

Richard was a United States Army veteran. Richard was a member for over 60 years in the St. Dominics parish Knights of Columbus. He was actively involved with the Orland Holy Ghost Club, a member of the Uniao Portugueza do Estado da California and the Orland Moose Lodge.

During his life in Orland he loved taking road trips with friends in their dune buggies. He also loved competing in the destruction derby's and would travel to the various county fairs throughout the north state. Richard also enjoyed many years bowling in the Orland Bowl leagues.

Richard was preceded in death by his wife "Ruby", parents Joseph and Emily, his sister's Lucille and Dorothy. Richard is survived by his two children, Michael Simons of Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany, Michele (Dean) Fumasi of Orland, three grandchildren, Fallon of Tempe Arizona, Briley and Theron Fumasi both of Orland. His sister Josie Nordel of Orland, brother Frank Simmons of Forest Ranch, along with several niece, nephews and cousins.

A viewing will be held in Orland at Sweet-Olsen Mortuary on Thursday June 4 from 5-8 PM. A mass will be held on Friday June 5 at 9 AM at St. Dominics Church in Orland. Because of California restrictions, seating at the church will be limited. A private graveside service will follow.

In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate memorial contributions be made to Enloe Foundation/Hospice or Westhaven Senior Living.
