Larry Wood
Lawrence Clarke "Larry" Wood was born on November 7, 1940 in Berkeley, CA, as the come lately youngest of four children, son of Rollin and Lillian (Erickson) Wood and passed away December 19, 2023. Larry was a proud graduate of Lake Elementary School and Orland High School.
He found himself smitten by a beautiful blonde and he convinced Shirley Boyles to marry him in 1959. He also joined the National Guard that year and served for 6 years. Soon arrived four children, Jody Samons, Marcy Wood, Dera Miller (Dean) and Lorne Wood (Renee), 4 redheaded kids in 5 years — and if you asked, with a twinkle in his eye, he attributed the rapid growth of the fiery-haired family to the milk man visiting while he was away at Guard. He always left out the part that he was the milkman.
After years of dairying, delivery and other jobs, Larry settled into the feed business managing Corning Feed and later owning Corning Feed Mart. After selling the feed store, he settled into a full retirement of gardening, raising chickens and goats and the never-ending egg and tomato delivery routes which gave him the opportunity to visit.
When grandchildren started arriving, he would always be the first to grab on to a new grandbaby or dump the toy basket out and crawl around the floor with a toddler. Amanda Samons, Erica Miles (Gary), Andrew Edens, Lauren Edens, Jarren Miller, Kellen Miller (Sara), Garrett Miller, Jenna Hahn (Chris) and Benjamin Wood enjoyed many years of his humor and antics. With the arrival of three great grandchildren – Trevor and Karli Kaye Miles and Jackson Edens - there was a whole new audience to be silly with. His lap held many generations and was usually the first place any little person headed straight to after coming through the door.
Larry moved west of Red Bluff and enjoyed the last couple of years living out of town and sitting on his deck where it was quiet. He will be greatly missed. Larry was predeceased by his parents, siblings, Shirley and son in law, Larry Edens. A private service was held on December 22, 2023. Donations in remembrance can be sent to the work training program at Expect More Tehama (expectmoretehama.com, c/o Kate Grissom, 615 Main Street, Red Bluff, CA 96080) or the Hereditary and Genetic Cancer Foundation (hergen.org, 146 Vierra Circle, Folsom, CA 95630).
