MARY L. PRINCE
Long time Orland resident Mary L. Prince, who was born in Chickasha, Oklahoma on October 20, 1922, passed away October 12, 2017 at the age of 95 at the Valley West Post Acute care facility in Williams, CA. Mary, with her spouse the late T.A. Prince, and sons Kenneth Prince and Donald Prince moved from the Bay Area to Orland in the late 1940's. Mary and her family became the owner/operators of the Cottage Cafe. She worked as the waitress and helped develop a popular business catering to truckers on Old HWY 99 and locals. During her working years Mary and T.A. opened two other successful mom and pop restaurants. While developing those businesses and while working, Mary volunteered time and effort to collecting money for the March of Dimes through the use of "swear jar" donations. Mary was able to generate significant amounts of money for the fight against polio. Through the years, Mary's volunteerism benefited several local service organizations including the Moose, Eagles, senior transportation and the Commodities Distribution program. She continued that work until her early 80's. During her working life Mary worked for Sears in Willows, J.C. Penny in Orland, and finally retiring from T.M. Duche' in early 2000. Mary is survived by: her sons Kenneth Prince of Orland and Donald Prince of Redding, five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held Monday, October 23, 2017 at the Oddfellows Cemetery on County Road P at 11 A.M. F.D. Sweet & Son's Mortuary is handling all arrangements.
